MORRISON, Colo. — Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden tore into the first of their two-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday, roaring into the place like it was still 1995.

Industrial music has lost a lot of its mystery since NIN’s song “Closer” first horrified parents. In an era when radio pop songs routinely borrow tricks from Trent Rezor’s bag, the NIN frontman’s stage presence seemed more like that of an elder statesman than the unhinged goth artist from the old days. Still, NIN’s stage show was consistently, disorientingly impressive, and Reznor himself still knows how to keep a crowd screaming.

Earlier, grunge pioneers Soundgarden were in fine form, with singer Chris Cornell sounding as good as ever. The band raced through  an 80-minute set with minimal banter, as if to remind fans just how many hits Soundgarden was responsible for.
