LONGMONT, Colo. — Longmont Fire says it was coordinating a multi-agency response for a large fire involving a big stack of railroad ties Wednesday night.

FOX31’s Mark Meredith confirmed the big fire was arson and that two people were in police custody for questioning. There were no arrests or charges yet. Police say the two suspects are men, 18-20 years old and that they were found running from the scene.

Longmont Police spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Satur says Longmont Fire and Mountain View Fire sent seven trucks and 25 firefighters to fight it.

It was burning almost one mile east of First Avenue and Martin Street, just east of the city of Longmont waste water treatment plant.

“No structures are in danger, but air quality in the area is poor due to the toxins/chemicals used in the treatment of railroad ties,” Satur says.

The fire caused a power outage to about 300 homes or businesses in the area. Power had been restored to most customers by 9:30 p.m.

“There are several road closures, primarily Martin Street between 3rd Avenue and Highway 119. We would request residents find alternative routes around the area,” Satur says.

It appeared the flames had been knocked down by 10 p.m. Satur said crews expected to be on scene for quite some time mopping up and putting out hot spots.
