DENVER — A water main break on Colorado Boulevard just north of I-25 brought traffic to a standstill during the afternoon rush on Thursday.

The city’s water pipes are old and that’s why we hear about these big water main breaks citywide.  The Colorado Boulevard pipe was put in place in 1955.

There are 3,000 miles of water pipe under the city.

There have been 111 water main breaks so far this year. The city spends $100 million a year trying to solve the problems before they happen.

Crews are working to replace water pipe, sometimes in projects that take care of 20 miles at a time.
