CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A fifth juror in the Aurora theater shooting trial was dismissed by Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. on Wednesday morning, saying she had not been forthcoming about whether she knew a witness who testified.

The dismissal whittles the pool of jurors to 19 — 12 that will be seated as the jury and seven alternates.

It was the second request by the defense to dismiss the juror, who was recognized by a witness, Maria Carbonell, on May 5. The next day, the defense requested the juror be dismissed but Samour declined. The juror works at a school as an attendance clerk where Carbonell’s son attends.

The defense renewed the request to dismiss the juror on Wednesday and this time Samour granted it. Two students from the school where the juror works were at the theater the night of the attack.

“I don’t believe you were completely forthcoming and candid with me when Ms. Carbonell testified,” Samour told the juror.

Juror 267 is a Hispanic woman in her 40s or 50s. She said she can understand the notion of mental illness, as she said some students at her school continue to act out in spite of all efforts made to help them.
