CASTLE ROCK, Colo. —  A mother of five is dead and her estranged husband in the hospital following an early morning stabbing Saturday.

Police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance in the Founders Village neighborhood around 5 a.m.

Investigators say they found a 36-year-old woman dead from an apparent stab wound, and a 44-year-old man with critical injuries.

Officers tell us the mother of five was living at home with her mother and brother to escape a domestic violence situation.

Police say the man forced his way into the home and allegedly stabbed his wife to death before attempting to take his own life.

The victim’s mother, brother and children were home when the murder took place.

The investigation is ongoing and police aren’t releasing the names of the victims or suspect as of Saturday.

“What we do know is that unfortunately, a young mother loss her life and a suspect is in custody,” said Jason Lyons, with Castle Rock Police.

Nobody else inside the home was hurt.

Castle Rock’s Victim Assistance Team is working with the victim’s five kids, along with her mother and her brother as they deal with this tragedy.
